And This Also Has Been One of the Dark Places of the Earth was published on Strange Horizons, my second professional sale (the first being Passing the Test) and my first sale to Strange Horizons. I was dead chuffed and still am.
 
It was written between the fall of Lehmans Bros and my losing the job at another large international investment bank. I guess it did sound a lot like the world was coming to an end in those days.
 
I no longer work in the City and I am much happier for it.
 
The title comes from the first pages of Heart of Darkness, where the narrator, Marlow, anchored with some friends on the Thames, waiting for the tide to turn, looks back to London.
